Diamond Pet Food Recall 2012 | Pet Sitter News from The Pet Depot Highland Village, TX

Due to a Salmonella outbreak at a Diamond Foods manufacturing plant, several dry dog foods have been recalled and at least 14 people have been sickened due to handling the contaminated food. The CDC does not have an official count on the number of pets that have become ill.

The pet food brands recalled include:
  • Wellness
  • Natural Balance
  • Kirklands/Costco
  • Solid Gold
  • Canidae
  • Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
  • Country Value
  • Diamond
  • Diamond Naturals
  • Premium Edge
  • Professional
  • 4Health
  • Taste of the Wild
  • Apex

If you feed any of these brands, please visit the brand’s website or call the company to see if your bag of dry dog food has a lot number that is part of the recall.

Signs of an infected pet include:
  • Diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus
  • Lethargy
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased appetite
  • Excessive salivation
  • Note, some infected pets may not appear sick at all

If your pet is showing any of these symptoms or has been consuming an infected product, please see your veterinarian. A veterinary examination and laboratory tests can be used to diagnose Salmonella infection. Your pet may require prompt treatment with supportive care, fluids, antibiotics, or hospitalization.

Humans can become ill by touching infected animals, contaminated food, or objects and surfaces such as food bowls, especially if they do not thoroughly wash their hands after the contacts. People who think they might have become ill after contact with dry pet food or with an animal that has eaten dry pet food should consult their health care providers. Infants, older adults, and persons with impaired immune systems are more likely than others to develop severe illness.

Recall at Diamond Pet Food | Natural Balance | Artemis | Dog Walker in Highland Village, TX | The Pet Depot Pet Sitting Service

Pet Food Recall Alert. Natural Balance and Artemis brands are both manufactured at the contaminated Diamond Foods plant. I recommend avoiding those brands as well. Those two companies are both starting to take “CYA” steps, which most likely means they are having an issue with their food too.

Top 5 Pet Health Issues | Highland Village Pet Sitting | WebMD

Veterinarians are reporting the following 5 issues as the top health problems for our pets:

1. Pets are not seeing the doctor regularly

While more people have pets, vet visits are on the decline. Annual or bi-annual visits allows for “early detection and intervention before medical problems like obesity cause serious disease.”

2. Obesity is on the rise in pets

Pet owners have a hard time noticing their pet’s increased weight. Regularly weigh your pet at home or stop by the vet for a free weigh-in. Just like in people, a healthy weight aides in a healthy life. “Obese pets have a shorter lifespan and increased risk of cancer, heart disease, respiratory problems, bladder disease, and, like humans, diabetes.”

3. Diabetes is increasing in both cats and dogs

This increase is likely tied to the obesity epidemic in pets as well as poor nutrition. Preventing diabetes by maintaining an ideal body weight and feeding a species appropriate diet (GRAIN FREE) is certainly easier than managing the disease with insulin injections.

4. Cancer

“According to the Morris Animal Foundation, 1 in 4 dogs dies from cancer and cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs over 2 years of age…Cats get cancer too, most commonly lymphoma. Annual examinations and blood tests by your family veterinarian will help to detect tumors while they are still easily treatable.”

5. Dental disease is on the rise

This is why it is so important to make regular vet visits so your pet’s teeth can be checked. Dental x-rays are easily performed along with teeth cleanings, if needed. Routine brushing at home can help minimize dental disease in your dog and cat. Unhealthy teeth in pets are linked to lots of health issues, just like in people.

Kissing Bugs = Killing Bugs for Dogs | Protect your pets from these migrating bugs | Highland Village, TX

The kissing bug, which resembles a stink bug, is making its way more and more to Texas and the rest of the U.S. Once commonly found in Central and South America, this bug is seeking out our warmer climate and can be quite dangerous to pets and humans. From one news article:

Kissing bugs, also known as Assassin Bugs, have migrated up from South America where they cause at least 14,000 human deaths a year from Chagas Disease. I know of 4 states in the United States that now have the kissing bug: California, Texas, Arizona, and Florida. When I first heard of the bug, the only state that I knew it was in was Texas. A  year and a half later I’m reading that it’s spreading quickly yet news of it isn’t as forthcoming. TNT wrote about the Kissing Bug about a year ago when they heard show dogs had died from their bite, but other news about this bug is very slow at getting out to the public.

Called a kissing bug because it generally bites around the mouth, this insect seeks us and our dogs out when we are sleeping. It is drawn to our warmth, smells, and interior light.

This bug can carry a parasite that causes the deadly disease, Chagas. While those cases are rare in the U.S., this pest can cause other damage including:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Fever
  • Swollen eyes
  • Itchy welts
  • Blisters
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seizures
  • Death in dogs

The Center for Disease control states that:

The risk of infection is much greater for domestic animals like dogs, which are more often exposed to kissing bugs while outdoors.

For prevention, make sure you and your pets sleep in the dark. Keep your human and pet bedding clean with regular washings. And, it is best to protect your property with pest control.

Chicken Jerky Illnesses in Dogs | Waggin Train | Highland Village, Flower Mound, Lewisville Pet Sitting and Dog Walking

All the chicken jerky illnesses in dogs are now being traced back by the FDA to 3 big brands: Waggin Trail, Milo’s Kitchen, and Canyon Creek Ranch. Here is a highlight of the story:

A log of complaints collected from pet owners and veterinarians contains references to at least three popular brands of jerky treats that may be associated with kidney failure and other serious ailments, according to internal Food and Drug Administration documents obtained by msnbc.com.

Of 22 “Priority 1” cases listed by the FDA late last year, 13 cited Waggin’ Train or Canyon Creek Ranch jerky treats or tenders, both produced by Nestle Purina PetCare Co., the records show. Another three listed Milo’s Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats, produced by the Del Monte Corp. The rest listed single brands or no brand….

The move comes as the FDA is under growing pressure from consumers and lawmakers to address rising numbers of illnesses blamed on the China-made treats. Before the warning was issued in November, the agency had logged 70 reports of illnesses tied to the treats last year. Since then, more than 530 additional complaints of illnesses and some deaths have been filed, officials said.

The complete story is available on the MSNBC site.
